Unknown man injures 8 people in Surgut, gets gunned down by police

At least eight people have been injured in a knife attack in the Russian city of Surgut in Siberia, before the attacker was shot by police, investigators said on August 19.

The knife attack occurred at around 11.20 am local time (11.50 pm Indian Standard Time). Authorities Saturday said the incident was being treated as a terror attack, with an 18-year-old Moroccan shot in the leg by police now in custody.

"A man was running along the main streets stabbing people", the TASS news agency reported.

Russia's Investigations Committee said the attacker had been "liquidated". "All the victims were hospitalized with wounds of different severity", said the Investigative Committee.

These images were posted on Russian social media, allegedly showing scenes of the violence in Surgut.

They added they were investigating the possibility he was suffering from mental illness.

Surgut, a comparatively large Siberian city 1,700 miles East of Moscow is home to a number of power plants, as well as oil and gas processing plants.
