Blast rocks Darjeeling, Gurung booked under stringent UAPA

Police sources said a hand grenade was hurled inside the police station where a civic volunteer and a home guard were on duty.

The blast took place at 10.15 p.m., almost 24 hours after an explosion in the heart of the hill town of Darjeeling that damaged few shops, triggering tension among locals though none was injured. "The grenade was thrown by unidentified miscreants at the police station". Both the injured have been hospitalised, said Kalimpong Superintendent of Police Ajit Singh Yadav. "It is either a case of gross incompetence on their part, or a case of fake blast planted by state agents to frame the GJM leadership", the GJM leader wrote.

"There was a bomb blast in Darjeeling's motor stand area at 12.10 a.m".

One person died and at least three policemen were injured in a blast near Kalimpong police station in Darjeeling on Saturday, reported NDTV. "We are suspecting their involvement [in the case]", Darjeeling Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Chaturvedi told journalists.

"Prima facie, it seems an improvised explosive device has been used".

"We have recovered some wires from the spot, which establishes that it was an IED explosion".

A HIGH-intensity blast shook Darjeeling's Chowkbazar in the wee hours of Saturday, the first such incident since the indefinite shutdown to press for a separate state of Gorkhaland began in the Hills over two months ago. "There has been no loss of life, but the loss of property has been recorded as many shops around the area have been damaged".

The civic police volunteer was killed on the spot while the two other police personnel were admitted to a nearby hospital with grievous injuries. The police have been deployed in the area.

West Bengal Police on Sunday booked GJM leaders Bimal Gurung, Prakash Gurung, Praveen Subba and several others in a bomb explosion which took place at Darjeeling motor-stand on Friday, IANS reported. The blast, we believe, was the handiwork of those who do not want Gorkhaland state to be formed. This was a planned move aimed at bringing disrepute to the movement and the demand for Gorkhaland. GJM president Gurung demanded a high-level probe by a committee comprising officials of the NIA, a central government agency, under the "supervision of the Supreme Court".

He wondered how the blast could take place as the entire Darjeeling region has been "fortified and turned into a garrison of sorts" and that it occurred only 200 metres from the police station.

He further said that the West Bengal government has repeatedly tried to paint GJM's movement as "anti national" and adding, "Earlier Mamata Banerjee accused us of being hands in gloves with the insurgents from North East, when we asked her to provide proof of the same, she simply couldn't, as she didn't have any proof to give".
