China military criticizes 'wrong' United States moves on Taiwan, South China Sea

America's diplomatic and defense chiefs sought Thursday to reinforce the threat of possible USA military action against North Korea after President Donald Trump's top strategist essentially called the commander-in-chief's warnings a bluff.

The tentative interest in diplomacy follows unusually combative threats between Mr Trump and North Korea amid worries Pyongyang is nearing its long-sought goal of being able to send a nuclear missile to the U.S. mainland.

Joe Dunford is traveling in Asia and involved in high-level discussions centered on the nuclear threat posed by North Korea, but he took time to address the recent tragedy in Charlottesville, Virginia.

But the sharp rhetoric of last week has since softened, with North Korea leader Kim Jong-un putting the Guam plans on hold - a move praised by President Trump.

Marine Corps Gen. Joe Dunford meets Chinese President Xi Jinping in the Great Hall of the People at the conclusion of his visit to Beijing.

Dunford agreed on Thursday that it would be "absolutely horrific if there would be a military solution to this problem, there's no question about it", AP reported.

The end state, of course, is a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.

Xi told Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, that the two countries should deal appropriately with their differences and work together to build a better future.

Commercial trade between Chile and North Korea is just $27 million a year, about $25 million of which is Chilean imports from the Asian country.

General Dunford also said there were no plans to cancel United States military exercises with South Korea scheduled to start on Monday - drills that North Korea could interpret as a new provocation. The views expressed therein are not necessarily those of, its sponsors or advertisers.

"A dialogue between South and North Korea must resume".

China's vote was a welcoming sign that Beijing is willing to work with Washington as tensions between the US and North Korea remain tense.

North Korea tested its second intercontinental ballistic missile in late July.

I think we have to be honest. Pyongyang has previously fired missiles and taken other steps in response to the annual exercises. "North Korea is nearing a threshold for the red line", Mr Moon said.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in speaks during a press conference marking his first 100 days in office at the presidential house in Seoul on Thursday.

"I do believe right now - there's a long way to go - but we are on a path that there is a possibility, and I hope a probability, that we can resolve this peacefully", he said. Guam is a USA island territory and hosts two US military bases.

Kim says his army has finalised plans to launch four missiles into the waters near the US Pacific territory of Guam, but are waiting for his order to strike.
