Indonesia had been quick to point out the mistake, with their Olympic committee chief, Inter Milan president Erick Thohir, slamming Malaysia's "negligence".

Retno also regretted the flag error incident since Malaysia is the closest neighboring country to Indonesia. Turning it upside down makes it resemble the flag of Poland.

Malaysian Youth and Sports Minister Kahiry Jamaluddin met the Indonesian delegation to formally apologise.

"We very much regret the mistake", it said in a statement.

A Malaysian daily newspaper also printed Indonesia's flag upside-down, while Games organisers were caught using the wrong flag for two Brunei athletes at the synchronised swimming.

Meanwhile, Bukit Aman federal police Special Branch director, Datuk Seri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said police were investigating the matter to identify the cause.

In PUTRAJAYA, the foreign affairs ministry extended an apology to the government and its people over the publication of the incident.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin conveys his apologies via Twitter for the Indonesian flag appearing the wrong side up in the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games 2017 commemorative booklet.

The creation of Malaysia when the British Empire was dismantled after the Second World War was bitterly opposed by Indonesia, itself then a new nation emerging from Dutch colonial rule and a short-lived Japanese occupation.

"Indeed, the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations this year is an occasion that we have invested in to rededicate ourselves to our shared values, culture and destiny".

On Twitter, Indonesians said their flag represents the sacrifices of independence heroes and accused Malaysia of either being stupid or deliberately misprinting it.

"We are waiting for the apology from the Malaysian government because this concerns the national pride of our country".

The online media today quoted the Indonesian president as saying that although the matter was regrettable, people in the country should not overplay the issue.
