Roger Goodell close to signing contract extension through 2024

But that isn't going to stop the owners from extending NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's contract for another five years.

The deal is expected to be five years in length, which would keep Goodell at the league's helm through at least the 2024 season, per Monday's report.

Roger Goodell, the Hydra of sports commissioners, seems to add another $30 or $40 million a year to his contract with every scandal he botches. The sources also told Schefter there are some who think the two sides were closer to a deal a month ago than they are today. DeMaurice Smith, the executive director of the NFLPA, recently said a work stoppage then is a "virtual certainty". Goodell worked in the league's public relations department where he was in charge of distributing media credentials for postseason games.

Negotiations on a new deal for Goodell have been underway since last May. He oversaw the league's football operations and officiating departments and supervised all league business functions.

If the National Football League eventually comes to terms with Goodell soon, New England Patriots fans will have the chance to personally congratulate the man who used his unilateral discipline authority to suspend Tom Brady on Thursday, Sept. 7 when he visits Gillette Stadium for the season opener. His ability to negotiate the terms of the current CBA made the owners a lot of money. The NFL is no longer required to file his salary as the league office has given up its non-profit status, thus salary figures are no longer available.
