Small airplane crashes near Madras airport

A small plane that early reports indicated had departed from the Bay Area crashed Saturday in central OR, killing the two people on board.

The small airplane did not make it to the airport and crashed down in the Willow Creek Canyon Area about a mile away from the runway.

Jefferson County Sheriff Jim Adkins said that a family member had initially planned to be on the plan but changed plans.

The single-engine, homebuilt Wheeler Express crashed under unknown circumstances near the Madras airport around 1:50 p.m., according to Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor.

So, the Central information network of OR reports that the crash happened about 2 p.m. near the municipal airport of the city of Madras.

Officials confirmed both of the plane's occupants, its pilot and passenger, died in the crash.

Visitors who were golfing nearby saw the plane take sharp turn before it crashed into the canyon.

The homemade aircraft was completely destroyed and had been engulfed by fire.

Many private aircraft are flying into OR this weekend for Monday's solar eclipse.
