Volkswagen to revive popular microbus as electric vehicle

Volkswagen said it is mainly targeting the markets in North America, Europe and China with both the I.D. "The I.D. Buzz stands for the new Volkswagen", Diess said in the press release.

Volkswagen (vlkpf) has announced that it will produce an electric version of its Microbus, the iconic, bug-eyed "hippy bus" most often associated with free-wheeling road trips to Woodstock.

But the new Camper won't just be a lifestyle vehicle, it'll also be a commercial vehicle, with VW planning to make their EV Camper an EV electric Panel Van too.

Volkswagen has been promoting the concept for more than a decade. BUZZ "the ideal balance between emotion, usability, and sustainability, while also showcasing our technological leadership". The company made the announcement at an annual auto show in Pebble Beach. It'll be one of many new electric models VW is set to introduce as part of its shift away from diesel engines.

According to Volkswagen, following the debut of the electric Microbus in both Detroit and Geneva, customers flooded them with emails and letters begging them to build the auto. Volkswagen also claim it will feature "highly automated driving" - Level 3 autonomous capabilities.

Wolfsburg says that the production I.D. Buzz will incorporate many design ideas from the concept vehicle, including multi-variable seating, interactive connectivity and highly automated driving.
