Raqqa: US-Led Attacks 'Kill 100 Civilians' In 48 Hours

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Sunday that five children and four women were among the victims.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights is a UK-based group monitoring the Syrian conflict via a network of contacts on the ground. However, Russian state news agency TASS claimed that Russian fighter jets killed more than 200 Islamic State fighters in Deir Az Zor without specifying date of the attack.

Anti-IS group Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently said 32 were killed in one district alone.

"The tolls are high because the airstrikes are hitting neighbourhoods in the city centre that are densely packed with civilians", said the director of SOHR, Rami Abdel Rahman.

The US-led coalition against Islamic State said attacks on militant targets were conducted routinely and the allegation had been sent to their teams for assessment.

The airstrikes targeted residential areas in Raqqa, the latest in a string of intensified air raids the US-led coalition has been carrying out against the IS-held areas in Raqqa, Xinhua reported.

In May, Syria wrote to the United Nations, harshly condemning the US-led coalition's fatal strikes against civilians as illegal and a breach of its sovereignty.

In the most recent monthly civilian casualty report released by US Central Command on August 4, the military admitted to 624 "likely" civilian casualties since the beginning of Operation Inherent Resolve more than three years ago.

Tens of thousands of people had fled the city, but those remaining faced severe restrictions of movement in and out of the city, which had dwindling food and water supplies, he said.
