Tom Savage labeled Texans' starting quarterback

After saying Watson was further ahead than any rookie quarterback he has been around, coach Bill O'Brien probably would not take much offense to the rookie's self-evaluation.

It was an extremely sharp performance by Savage, the Texans' new starter, as he continues to hold off the challenge of gifted first-round draft pick Deshaun Watson.

Savage is going into his fourth season in the NFL.

"Tom has really had a good camp".

Former Texans' wide receiver Andre Johnson was in attendance during Monday's practice in Houston and he told the local media that he's impressed with Savage's accuracy.

"Tom is the starter", the Texans coach said after practice on Tuesday.

In two preseason games (and five series of work), Savage is 17 of 20 for 167 yards and a touchdown.

Watson struggled as a passer, but Bruce Ellington and D'Onta Foreman spiked his yards-per-attempt average with big run-after-catch plays, and Watson rushed for a score for the second straight week.

With projections of 2,060.9 yards, 11.8 touchdowns and 127.2 fantasy points, numberFire's algorithms have Savage pegged as the 32nd quarterback overall.

"Like I've said: Deshaun is a very, very good young player who has a great future in this League", O'Brien said. "Let's put the cards on the table, but Tom has been here for four years".
