After the flood, region hit by Harvey will face epic housing crisis

US Donald Trump's decision to eliminate Obama's flood regulations, as well as his overall attitude to the ongoing Harvey storm in Texas, has caused vivid debate among social media users.

The President has promised billions of dollars to help Texas rebuild from Hurricane Harvey, but his Republican allies in the House of Representatives are looking to cut nearly a billion dollars from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's disaster accounts.

Just two weeks ago, President Donald Trump rolled back an order by his predecessor that would have made it easier for storm-ravaged communities to use federal emergency aid to rebuild bridges, roads and other construction so they can better withstand future disasters.

"To the people of Texas and Louisiana, we are 100 percent with you", Trump said in his opening statement at a joint news conference with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto. "I'm grateful for the way they were able to evacuate so many people and minimize the loss of life".

Long said FEMA is already on the ground in Corpus Christi and surrounding areas assessing the situation.

Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas on Friday and wreaked havoc on the state over the course of the weekend. "And due to their assistance, it means that Texas will be able to begin the rebuilding process very swiftly".

"I'm just bracing myself to see if I can do this, because I know: Get the elevation certificates, get your documents for the insurance, and start fighting with the insurance company", Thompson said.

"Our number one goal from Corpus Christi to east of Houston is still protecting and preserving life and rescuing every person we can find", Abbott said.

"We expect a many-year recovery in Texas, and the federal government is in this for the long haul", Elaine Duke, acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, said Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Harvey, the fiercest hurricane to hit the U.S.in 13 years, was being blamed for five deaths.

Abbott said the focus was on rescue in the Houston area, citing multiple high-level vehicles sent in late Saturday night that were being manned by the National Guard, but that boats and helicopters will be available all across east Texas for swift water rescue.
