Developing story: Two dead, many trapped as Delhi landfill caves in

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been facing difficulties in reclaiming the landfill site at Ghazipur and they continued to dump garbage there.

A portion of the garbage dump at the Ghazipur landfill site, in East Delhi, caved in today, killing two persons.

A private TV channel reported that the body of a girl, who was riding a scooty, has been recovered.

The Delhi Police said that rescue operations are underway.

Delhi Fire Service (DFS), which got a call about the incident around 2.45 p.m., sent four-five JCB machines to the spot for rescue operations.

Police confirmed that two people were killed in the mishap. Reason of the incident can be ascertained only after investigation said Ranbir Singh, EDMC Commissioner, Delhi. Also a team of NDRF comprising 45 personnel have been rushed to cave-in site.

Four cars, which were moving on the nearby road, fell into a canal as the landfill collapsed on them, officials said. The Ghazipur site caters to the waste generated in east Delhi, central Delhi and the old quarters of the city.
