Houston police rescue 2000 people but more awaiting help

Houston, Texas-A Houston police officer has died while trying to reach the police station during the floods from Hurricane Harvey.

"I've got work to do", Perez told his wife, according to the chief.

Mayor Sylvester Turner and police Chief Art Acevedo would not confirm the report in The Houston Chronicle. "Unfortunately, in the darkness, Sgt. Perez drove onto an underpass, which is about 16 and half feet, drove into the water and he died in a drowning type of event". Sandy says the shelter is now out of cots and waiting for more to arrive as thousands more people are expected to need to evacuate their homes. The Red Cross has also set up other shelters throughout the area. Houston officials say fire personnel have responded to more than 5,500 calls for service in the city since Harvey began pounding the area this weekend.

"We made a decision to leave officers there waiting until the morning, because as much as we wanted to recover him last night, we could not put more officers at risk for what we knew in our hearts was going to be a recovery mission", the chief said.

Once the dive team got to the scene, it was "too treacherous to go under and look for him", Acevedo said.

A Houston police officer has been confirmed dead after he drowned in floodwaters from Tropical Storm Harvey that left him trapped in his vehicle.

Acevedo said anyone violating the curfew would be stopped, searched and arrested.

"He was one of the sweetest people I've met", Acevedo said of Perez, whose death Sunday was two days short of his 61st birthday. "And every day, we ask them to get on our roads and to come to work and to strive to make this city a much better place in which to live".

On Monday, Perez's fellow officers grew anxious when he didn't show up to roll call and called his wife, who said she hadn't seen him since he left Sunday. Acevedo said he had "the privilege" of notifying Perez's family.

Sergeant Perez fulfilled his objective.
