Frankfurt 2017: Audi uncovers RS4 Avant

As you would expect from a proper RS model, the new RS 4 comes with a sports suspension setup as standard, with Dynamic Ride Control available as an option.

While RS4s are limited to 155mph from the factory, the addition of an RS dynamic package will see its top speed shoot up to 174mph. Audi says the new RS 4 Avant will be a combination of high performance and ease of everyday usability.

Combine that grunt with the new eight-speed tiptronic and the RS4's Quattro all-wheel drive, and a planted right foot will see you getting from 0-62 in just 4.1 seconds - more than half a second quicker than the B8. However, for all that brute power which is distributed to all four wheels, the engine is surprisingly efficient and has been rated for a combined fuel consumption figure of 8.8 litres/100 km. A sports rear differential is part of the options list.

Indeed. Audi claims that it took design inspiration from the 90 quattro IMSA GTO (which you can admire in our Best Audi Sport cars gallery), so there are huge air inlets and carbonfibre-effect sills at the front end. Expected to be launched globally sometime next month, deliveries of the Audi RS4 Avant will only commence towards the beginning of 2018.

All the usual RS styling cues are present - there's a big, honeycomb grille, wider wheel arches and twin oval tailpipes, while inside there are RS trim elements and bucket style seats.

The RS4 has standard sports suspension, which makes it sit 7mm lower than a regular A4 Avant and Audi's Drive Select driving mode system is standard. "The Audi RS 4 Avant is our RS icon with an incomparable history", commented Stephan Winkelmann, Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH.

In the Audi virtual cockpit and head-up display, RS-specific displays indicate the g-forces, tire pressures and torque.

The Audi RS 4 Avant will be ordered by the start of fall, before arriving at dealers in Germany and other European countries from the start of 2018. The basic price will be Euro 79,800.
