Blast Outside Cricket Stadium in Kabul

A suicide bomber blew himself up at a checkpoint near the main cricket stadium in the Afghan capital Kabul on Wednesday, killing at least three people as a tournament was under way, officials said.

At least three Taliban militants were killed and their hideout destroyed after Afghan army launched an airstrike in the eastern province of Nangarhar, Afghan military said Wednesday. The Interior Ministry said initial reports showed one policeman and two civilians were killed by what was described as a suicide bombing.

The Kabul cricket board officials confirmed the incident took place close to Alokozay cricket stadium.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack. They added the match was stopped immediately after the blast.

Scores of police blocked the road leading to the stadium where the sixth match of the Shpageeza Cricket League season between the Boost Defenders and Mis Ainak Knights was under way.

Afghanistan has always been a victim of terrorism and has been deprived of regular worldwide cricket games due to security concerns.
