Democratic Seattle Mayor Resigns Following Fifth Child Sex Abuse Accusation

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray announced his resignation Tuesday after a fifth man - one of his cousins - came forward and accused him of sexual abuse decades ago.

Seattle's gay mayor, Ed Murray, announces he's resigning on Weds, after yet another allegation he molested a minor.

"It is time for Mayor Murray to step down", Durkan said in a statement Tuesday, noting that she had previously urged him "to reflect deeply" on whether he should remain in office. "To the people of this special city and to my dedicated staff, I am sorry for this painful situation".

The Seattle Times reported ( ) Tuesday that the man is Murray's first cousin once removed, Joseph Dyer. Murray lived with Dyer's family in NY after his mother passed away.

Dyers claims Murray made him have oral sex.

"There would be times when I would fake sleeping because I didn't want him touching me", Dyer said.

Murray, 62, claims the allegation stems from a split in the family, which began with a common-law marriage between his sister and Sottile's brother.

"And I am proud of what we have accomplished together at the City during my time as mayor, passing a nation-leading $15 minimum wage, and major progressive housing affordability and police accountability legislation, as well as negotiating an agreement to build a world-class arena that I believe in time will bring the National Hockey League and NBA to Seattle".

As a young man, he considered joining the priesthood and spent a year at a seminary in 1976 before studying sociology at the University of Portland, a private Catholic institution.

But Murray, a nationally known champion of gay rights and progressive causes, had resisted calls to resign.

Anderson, Murray's mentor, died in 1995.

Born in Aberdeen and a graduate of Lacey's Timberline High School, Murray climbed through the political ranks after he was appointed to fill a vacant state House seat in 1995.

Murray said he has no plans to resign before his term is over at the end of this year. As mayor, he campaigned to raise the minimum wage.

His mother Maryellen Sottile also spoke to the outlet, saying that a boy did accuse Murray of abuse.

After Trump was elected last fall, Murray became a frequent critic.
