More than 2000 local students pick up their Junior Cert results today

Most of these, 1,006, sat the Junior Cert.

More than 60,000 students are receiving the results of their Junior Certificate exams today.

English results show a slight increase in the numbers achieving an honours grade.

Rather than the old "A, B, C" grade format, students weer awarded one of six grade descriptors, from "Distinction" to "Not Graded".

The overall number sitting the exams rose by 2.3% this year to 61,654.

With teenagers due to celebrate their results across the country, parents are being encouraged to talk to their children about alcohol use. "I wish to congratulate all those who receiving their results today". Family members, in particular parents, are the single strongest influence on young people's attitudes towards alcohol.

"The Junior Cert is an important milestone for students and provides invaluable guidance about each student's interests and strengths as they prepare for the Leaving Certificate and beyond". Parents should be empowered by this and get involved in their child's plans for results night celebrations.

The figure is a small increase (of three students) on the numbers who sat the exam past year, with a new junior cycle programme now in place.
