North Korea nuclear test 10 times more powerful than Hiroshima: Japan

Commending the "dignity and restraint" shown by South Korea and Japan despite both countries being "in the firing line of Pyongyang's reckless ambitions", the Foreign Secretary said there had been a "steady drumbeat of provocative and risky actions by Kim Jong-un's regime".

Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe has urged Russian Federation to collaborate against the policies pursued by North Korea to help scale down the current tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

"Russia and China are not on board with the content of the resolution", the diplomat said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"The amount of pressure that North Korea has been put under economically is still far short of the kind of sanctions that were applied to Iran and also to Iraq".

Putin met Moon Jae-in on the sidelines of an economic summit in the far eastern Russian city of Vladivostok amid mounting global concerns that their shared neighbour plans more weapons tests, possibly a long-range missile launch ahead of a key weekend anniversary.

Haley reiterated United States threats to impose sanctions on countries that trade with North Korea.

President Donald Trump reiterated Thursday that military action is "certainly" an option against North Korea, as his administration tentatively concurred with the pariah nation's claim to have tested a hydrogen bomb.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley accused North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Monday of "begging for war" and urged the Security Council to impose the "strongest possible" sanctions.

But tensions in China-U.S. ties have increased since Trump took office, with the U.S. president having authorized an investigation into China's alleged theft of intellectual property, and suggesting trade relations would be linked to Beijing's help on North Korea.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in stated Wednesday that North Korea makes the situation on the Korean Penisula tense and due to this the whole region might "face an unpredictable situation ahead".

Moon said close coordination between the two countries has become "even more critical" in light of the North Korean nuclear issue.

"If our participation in talks is desired, I will immediately say yes", Merkel told Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung in an interview to be published on Sunday.

Trump spoke with Xi of China, the country seen as having the most influence on its unruly neighbor and key to getting any sanctions regime to stick.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Moon Jae In agreed Thursday to exert stronger pressure on North Korea in the wake of a recent nuclear test by Pyongyang, including by the adoption of tougher United Nations sanctions.

Pyongyang's announcement on Sunday was met with severe verbal backlash from across the world, with countries like the U.S. and Japan demanding even stricter sanctions from the United Nations (UN) against the North in an effort to cripple its economy, thereby forcing the nation to curb its missile tests.

Despite the North's fiery rhetoric, South Koreans are generally calm, going about their lives with no sign of panic. Over the years, the only thing that has stopped North Korea from following through with force is the threat of massive retaliation and total annihilation. There are now two THAAD launchers in operation at the Seongju base. More than 30 people were hurt when about 8,000 police broke up a blockade near the site by about 300 villagers and members of civic groups opposed to the deployment, fire officials said.
