Sagrada Familia Church Evacuate After False Alarm in Barcelona

Spanish police have evacuated and cordoned off one of Barcelona's main tourist attractions, the Sagrada Familia basilica, as part of an anti-terrorist operation.

It was reported earlier today that Catalan police were on high alert following a warning via the Spanish intelligence centre CITCO that five jihadists were intending to attack Europe.

"Situation has been normalised in Sagrada Familia", the regional police force said in a Twitter message.

They added: "If you live [near] Sagrada Familia do not leave your home or not go to bed".

Police had closed a nearby metro station while they inspected the van and closed several nearby streets.

The Roman Catholic church was designed by Catalan artist Antoni Gaudí and is the most visited monument in Spain, with millions of visitors every year.

The counter-terror operation comes less than a month after Barcelona was hit by a terror attack that killed 13 people and injured 130 others.
