Tampa Bay Rays vs. New York Yankees

Tampa Bay Rays vs. New York Yankees

No word yet from Major League Baseball if Boston and Tampa Bay will play at Tropicana Field on Friday night as scheduled _ the Rays expect to host the three-game set, but it could be reconfigured to give them an extra day off to handle personal matters. The Rays (71-74) dropped them four games behind the Twins in the race for the second wild card. Alex Colome closed for his 44th save in 49 chances. The Yankees (78-65) moved to within three games of AL East-leading Boston, who was idle Monday. Gray allowed two solo home runs in Tuesday night's loss, but otherwise was spectacular and everything the Yankees had hoped for.

Kevin Kiermaier led off the first inning with a homer for the Rays.

Wednesday: Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays at Citi Field, 1:05 p.m., YES.

But from the moment the Rays took the field to a smattering of boos, the crowd of 21,024 was decidedly rooting for the New Yorkers. The chants of "Let's go, Yankees" started as leadoff man Brett Gardner stepped in, and echoed for most of the evening.

Only 15,327 fans showed up in Flushing due to the change of venue from St. Petersburg to Queens, and although all tickets were $25, fans sat only in the lower bowl of Citi Field since not enough tickets were sold to fill the middle and upper decks. Foul balls that flew into empty sections were retrieved, eventually, by security guards. "[The hurricane] being over and things taking a turn for the better, you see guys here breathing sighs of relief", Odorizzi said. The Mets' game at Wrigley Field, meanwhile, was posted on the out-of-town scoreboard.

It was, in essence, a Yankees home game in disguise. However, several likely starters have experience at Citi Field from their times with other teams, including Logan Morrison, Corey Dickerson, Wilson Ramos and, most notably, Lucas Duda, who spent his entire career with the Mets before being traded to Tampa Bay on July 26. Frazier's liner in the fifth was hauled in by right fielder Steven Souza Jr. on the warning track. He had an MRI.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi talks about the status of Greg Bird and Clint Frazier on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017. He didn't play Monday after coming off the disabled list. He missed more than a month due to a strained left oblique. But plate umpire Ted Barrett, who had just had a mask malfunction during the previous at-bat, rung up Frazier and pinch-hitter Didi Gregorius grounded out to end the inning.

CC Sabathia (12-5) only lasted 4.1 innings in his 24th start of the season, but the big lefty surrendered just one run on six hits, although he had to tangle with another dreaded successful bunt, this one by Peter Bourjos in the third. Last Friday at Boston, he was tagged for eight runs in three-plus innings. Jaime Garcia takes on Chris Archer in the finale. He hasn't pitched since August 20.
