Yankees do just enough to win so-called road game at Citi Field

When CC Sabathia walked Peter Bourjos, the No. 9 hitter, and gave up a one-out single to Trevor Plouffe with the Yankees leading by four runs, Girardi didn't allow the veteran lefty another pitch to work out of the jam against Evan Longoria, who owns Sabathia. It hasn't mattered where the Rays have played of late as they have lost six of nine to fall four games behind Minnesota for the AL's second wild card.

"He's hitting about.900 off me", Sabathia said. Maybe there are some of you out there who have some real issues now, but make sure you take care of yourselves, and we'll be back home and expect to play over the weekend against Boston and continue this [play-off] push here. NY began Tuesday four games ahead of the Twins for the first AL wild card. Now, he has no qualms about the inning he is called on.

"I came in here with an open mind I knew once I was traded that I was going to be a piece that could be used at any point, and I have no problem with that", Robertson said.

Even though the Rays wore home whites, sat in the home dugout, and had their highlights played on the Citi Field video board, their fans were vastly outnumbered by Yankees supporters, who went home happy after a win.

After starting with 6 1/3 hitless innings against Minnesota last week, Jake Odorizzi (8-8) did not allow a hit until the fourth, when he threw just 15 of 51 pitches for strikes and was chased with two outs. I got a pitch I could drive on a 3-2 count.

"He got him twice, and I didn't feel like pressing my luck", Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

The Yankees (78-66) had a three-game winning streak snapped. After Starling Castro struck out, Matt Holliday hit a grounder to third, and Plouffe tried for a backhand grab but let the ball bounce under his glove and into the left-field corner.

After getting swept by the Indians in three games in late August the Yankees have won three straight series and need a split across the next two tilts to extend that to four.
