8 killed, over 30 missing in boat capsizing in India

The boat was reportedly carrying more people than it could accommodate.

A boat carrying 60 people capsized in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, killing at least 22 of its passengers, District Magistrate Bhawani Singh told PTI.

Heavy monsoon rains have flooded rivers in parts of India, where boats are often the main mode of transport in remote areas. According to Times Now, police have recovered six bodies.

So far, 15 people have been rescued by the NDRF and the police and 15 others swam to safety.

The police rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation, News Nation reported.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the kin of the deceased, ANI reported. Rescue operations are now underway with a team of NDRF on the spot.

The death toll due to the tragedy is likely to go up.
