Boeing Wins $600 Million for Designing Next US Air Force One

(BA) won an Air Force contract to begin designing the next Air Force One presidential aircraft in a deal worth just under $600 million.

The Air Force said the $600 million contract will cover the costs of redesigning the interior and avionics of the airplanes, upgrading communications and electrical power systems, adding a medical facility, an executive interior, and a self-defense system. These will replace the two current VC-25A (Boeing 747-200) presidential support aircraft. The company is working with a program called the Presidential Airlift Recapitalization to "investigate saving opportunities during preliminary design efforts", according to a news release.

The Air Force announced in August that it purchased two commercial Boeing 747 jetliners to be transformed into the new Air Force One planes.

Most notably, though, is Boeing's commitment to President Trump's demands to lower the cost of Air Force One. Air Force officials tout the KC-46A as a huge step in recapitalizing a tanker fleet that remains the world leader in air refueling.

The Pentagon's 2018 budget request pegged two new Air Force One jets at $3.2 billion between 2018 and 2022. "These aircraft will provide the President of the United States with safe, reliable, and affordable air transportation equipped with all mission capabilities necessary to continuously execute the constitutional responsibilities of Commander-in-Chief, Head of State, and Chief Executive".

Plans call for awarding the EMD contract modification next summer, the Air Force said. A contract award is expected next year.
