Pinellas becomes the latest school district to delay reopening to Monday

Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools will remain closed through Friday as the community recovers from Hurricane Irma.

Schools will be closed through Tuesday. Currently, 66 local schools remain without electricity, though efforts to remedy that are ongoing.

School officials said the answer is multifaceted, including that some schools are in the same predicament as many homes at the moment: no power.

"This will also provide time for cleanup and fix of our homes, schools and community", the release states. A recorded message on the district's main phone lines at (386) 734-7190, 255-6475, 427-5223 and 860-3322 will have updated information, as well as the district's website at www.volusia.k12.fl.us or the district's Facebook and Twitter pages.

Despite the flooding on Tybee Island, Tybee Maritime Academy Principal Pat Rossiter said the charter school's facilities were okay as of Monday.

"Many of our schools are still being used as shelters, and many of our students' families and our employees need time to make it back to Southwest Florida after evacuating from Hurricane Irma", wrote Lauren Stillwell in a news statement. The school calendar for the 2017-18 school year includes three makeup days: November 20, 21 and 22.
