Irma Recovery In St. Thomas Expected To Be Slow And Painful

Britain on Wednesday (Sept 13) announced an extra £25 million (S$44.6 million) in aid for its territories in the Caribbean that have been devastated by Hurricane Irma.

Residents in the larger St. Thomas are anxious food supplies could run low before they are replenished.

Many of those evacuated from the decimated Leeward Islands of the Caribbean, including the British Virgin Islands (BVI), have been able to enter Puerto Rico, a United States territory to the west, but thousands are still trying to leave the storm-ravaged islands. "We need to rebuild the schools, the businesses, the restaurants and, of course, the homes".

Grapski, managing partner for La Vida Hospitality and its multiple businesses in Sussex County, invites the area's residents and visitors to help support the Virgin Islands victims of Hurricane Irma.

"We're not going to have recovery in an instant", Mapp told Bloomberg.

President Donald Trump will travel to the Naples area as part of a visit to hurricane-damaged Florida on Thursday.

In the U.S. Virgin Islands, damage was particularly widespread on St. John, an island of stunning natural beauty that is mostly national park surrounded by coral reefs. "Electricity is down and they are saying it may be down for years", Anguila resident Imogen Gough, 49, told TIME on Tuesday. He reached Puerto Rico on Tuesday. "Everyone's helping everyone. We're all trying to stay positive".

Venezuelan Minister of Interior Nestor Luis Reverol Torres said Venezuela has sent 10 tons of food, drinking water, medicines, mattresses and other items to help Cubans recover.

But he said: "Communications has been hard, it isn't easy to fly between the islands and it isn't always easy for the governors or British staff to know who is left behind on which island".

In Cuba, Hurricane Irma impacted about 90 percent of the country, causing the most damage in the central and western provinces, according to the Office of the Resident Coordinator.
