Modi was born to Hiraba and Damodardas Modi in Vadnagar in Gujarat's Mehsana district on September 17, 1950.

While his birthday is being celebrated as Sewa Divas, Twitter is flooded with birthday wishes for the Prime Minister.

The PM began his day by seeking his mother's blessings in Gujarat and soon wishes started pouring in on social media. Not only his fans and followers around the world are sending him wishes on his big day, but also Bollywood stars have tweeted and wished him a "very happy birthday".

"Let us strengthen the ' Swachhata Hi Seva' movement with our active and continuous participation so that we can fulfil Mahatma Gandhi's dream of a clean India", he said.

Targeting the prime minister's critics, he said Modi had ruffled several feathers by his action against the corrupt and status quo - "after all, years of privilege of a select few are now over and the poor are now getting their due".

Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh also wished the prime minister on his birthday to Modi. Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal wished PM Modi on behalf of the people of Assam.

PM Modi would then attend the closing ceremony of the Narmada Mahotsav, address a gathering at Dabhoi and lay the foundation stone for the National Tribal Freedom Fighters' Museum.
