Redknapp fired after dismal Birmingham start

In breaking news this evening, Birmingham City and Harry Redknapp have "parted ways".

Redknapp - who embarked on a rebuilding programme at City over the summer, which included the club-record signing of Jota - took over after Gianfranco Zola's disastrous reign last season.

"Lee Carsley, Blues Head Professional Development Coach, will step in as Caretaker Manager".

On Saturday afternoon, Birmingham lost 3-1 at home to Preston North End, despite taking the lead at St. Andrews.

Yesterday's defeat left Birmingham second from bottom in the Championship, with one win from eight matches.

And after today's 3-1 home defeat to Preston, Birmingham made a decision to sack the 70-year-old.

"The Blues are in the bottom three and after spending money and been expected to be challenging at the summit, Harry has paid an early price for poor results".

We thank him for all his efforts and wish him good luck for the future.

Birmingham City face former boss Gary Rowett next in the Championship as they travel to Derby on September 23rd.

"It's not an excuse but today I had three of the forwards missing who I would have picked, probably the three most exciting players in all honesty".

"Fans deserve better and that was my motivation to carry on this season.

I didn't get the players in I was after in pre-season and suddenly I have got a load of players in", he told the Birmingham Mail.

Carsley has a growing reputation in the game and is believed to be high on the list of candidates for the job, with former Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka believed to be keen on the role, as is Redknapp's former assistant Steve Cotterill.
