Mother fighting for life in coma after flu

She fell unconscious while in a hospital for the flu, following which she was put into induced coma and underwent an emergency C-section surgery.

The federal Department of Health's latest influenza surveillance report, which recorded flu prevalence up to 1 September, said the virus peaked nationwide in the fortnight ending 18 August, with this season's outbreak showing comparable or higher levels than in recent years.

Her family is trying to raise $20,000 for medical and travel expenses as the 33-year-old remains in a critical condition in the Alfred hospital.

"As a result her gorgeous boy arrived earlier than planned and following his birth Sarah was, and remains, in a critical condition in an induced coma", her family has said on a GoFundMe page.

"As you can imagine the cost of living 270 kilometres away from home, maintaining a bedside vigil by your wife in ICU and also caring for a newborn is quickly taking its toll", Ms Holt wrote.

GIVING birth for the very first time is an incredibly special moment - but for Sarah Hawthorn - she's completely unaware that she is now the mother to a lovely baby boy. "The joy of the arrival of her precious baby.tinged with sadness as we continue to hope and pray for the best possible outcome".

The Victorian Department of Health confirmed the eight-year-old girl died at the Angliss hospital at Upper Ferntree Gully.

Her father Christian Brealey said his "beautiful princess" died on Friday after going into cardiac arrest.

"We are devastated by the loss of our attractive, loving little angel", Mr Brealey said. We want to thank our friends and family and the broader community for all the messages of love and compassion.

"The problem is pregnant women really trust their caregiver. if the obstetrician says "this is really important for the baby" they will get it done".

She told 3AW's Neil Mitchell the death of the young girl was "one of the other very sad cases that we've seen this flu season".

Rosie Anderson was struck down by the flu.
