Drunk man rams vehicle into bike near AIIMS, 1 killed

The accused, who was arrested on Monday itself but was released on bail, was again held on Wednesday after charges of intention of murder were framed against him, a report in The Hindu quotes police.

Friend of a young photography student who died in a road accident early on Sunday has alleged that the police tried to shield the accused.Maninder Singh, a friend of victim, Gurmeet Singh, alleged that he was told by Delhi cops not to call it a murder but a simple accident, instead.

“His medical examination showed he was drunk, ” said police sources. They asked him not to blow smoke "in their face". "He had chased us and hit us intentionally". "He later chased Gurpreet and Maninder in his vehicle and rammed their motorcycle, dragging it for more than 100 metres before hitting an auto-rickshaw and a cab", a police officer said.

Meanwhile, the accused was nabbed by bystanders and handed over to the police.

On Wednesday, Gurpreet Singh succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday - three days after he was admitted to the AIIMS trauma centre.

Gurpreet's family said that the duo made a decision to leave when the accused threatened to kill them. But the Mahanta followed them in his Ford Fiesta and rammed his sedan into the motorcycle.

Mahanta also hit a taxi and an auto on the same day while trying to escape the scene.

Maninder Singh, though out of danger, is undergoing treatment. When Gurpreet protested, Mahanta allegedly abused them and threatened them with dire consequences. However, the police have confirmed that Gurpreet's friend is now stable.

This led the police to add Section 302 (punishment for murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) against the accused, notes The Hindu.

The accused lawyer, a native of Assam and a resident of south Delhi's Defence Colony, is working under a standing counsel of the Assam government.

Gurpreet and Maninder were shooting a documentary on the lives of outstation patients near AIIMS.
