Journalist's killing during IPFT blockade; Know all about political outfit

Supporters of Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) brutally hacked to death a journalist – Santanu Bhowmik (23) at Mandai under Jirania subdivision today.Three persons, including a Forester also suffered serious injuries in the incident.

Prohibitory orders were promulgated in more than 10 places of West Tripura and Khowai districts.

As per Reports, so far four people associated with IPFT have been arrested by Tripura police.

Bhowmik, who worked for Dinraat, a local cable news channel, had gone to Mandai to cover an incident where members of the IPFT and Tripura Rajaer Upajati Ganamukti Parishad (TRUGP) had gathered amid rising tension following some clashes that had taken place between the two sides on Tuesday.

Days after the country witnessed killing of journalist Gauri Lankesh which led to widespread protests, yesterday, another journalist was beaten to death while covering a clash in the Northeastern state of Tripura.

The journalist, Shantanu Bhowmik was working for a local television news channel. He was rushed to the Agartala Government Medical College and Hospital by the police and workers of the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) but was declared dead on arrival. Sarkar also directed the Police Chief to investigate the murder on priority.

One young journalist, Shantanu Bhoumik, working for Dinrat News channel, decided otherwise and in her urge to fearless the onslaught, he had recorded the scenes on his mobile.

"We demand that the state government should give adequate compensation to the family of the young journalist whose life was snuffed out in the line of duty". Tribals play a crucial political role in the state with 20 of the 60 assembly seats reserved for them.
