Erdogan, Trump hold talks in NY

The State Department, in informing Congress that it was formally withdrawing the planned sale, said it was at the request of Sig Sauer, a firearms manufacturer, which had requested the license from the USA government that's needed to export weapons outside the U.S. Turkey's ties with the United States are also strained over Washington's support for the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia, which it considers a terrorist group.

Erdogan also said Turkey was considering counter-measures, including imposing sanctions, against Kurdish northern Iraq over a planned referendum.

Erdogan was addressing the the Turkish American National Steering Committee (TASC) at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square when a few members of the audience began yelling at the president.

Erdogan spoke through a translator and referred to Trump as "my friend, Donald".

Asked by a reporter today if he would "reconcile" with Erdoğan on "the Kurdish issue", Trump replied, "We'll be discussing many issues - many issues".

Turkish troops are also carrying out military exercises near the border and Erdogan said on Saturday the resolution on troop deployment overseas will be submitted to parliament for a vote.

One major issue sure to be on Erdogan's mind is the extradition of Fetullah Gulen - leader of the FETO terror network that is accused of organizing a deadly coup attempt in Turkey in 2016.

But the United States had already quietly put the sale on hold after the violence, and the Trump administration had informed the Turkish government that the sale wouldn't be allowed to take place.

The EU and human rights organisations have expressed concern over Turkey's security crackdown since the failed coup.

Ankara has requested he be extradited to face charges in Turkey.

"I am quite hopeful relations will improve ..."

Merkel, who has been at odds with Erdogan on many fronts over the a year ago, has said that "the fact is clear that Turkey should not become a member of the European Union". We have been lingering at the doorstep of the European Union and things have got worse.
