Japan Deploys Missile Interceptor Near NKorea Flight Path

President Trump's focus all through the week at the United Nations will be on three goals, National Security Advisor Lt Gen HR McMaster said.

"We have strangled their economic situation", she said.

"I spoke with President Moon of South Korea last night".

The worldwide community is scrambling to contain an increasingly belligerent North Korea, which in recent weeks has prompted global alarm by conducting its sixth and largest nuclear test and firing long-range missiles over Japan that it says could reach the US mainland.

Washington's ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, kept up the rhetorical pressure ahead of the upcoming meetings in NY, asserting that if the North should pose a serious threat to the U.S. or its allies, "North Korea will be destroyed". "If that doesn't work, General Mattis" - the USA defense secretary - "will take care of it".

The U.S. military has described the exercises as training for readiness "to fight tonight" against North Korea if needed.

The missile on Friday traveled 2,300 miles as it flew over Japan on Friday before landing in the northern Pacific Ocean.

US President Donald Trump will make his debut on the United Nations stage on Tuesday with his address to the annual General Assembly session, setting out his global priorities and pushing for long-pending UN reforms against the backdrop of the deepening North Korean nuclear challenge.

"These repeated provocations on the part of North Korea are impermissible and we protest in the strongest words", Yoshihide Suga, Japan's top government spokesperson, told reporters in a press conference after the launch.

The North's latest show of resistance came when it launched a long-range missile over Japan on Friday, just four days after the UN Security Council had passed a tough new package of sanctions. "There's no military solution here, they got us".

China and Russia have started joint naval drills in the waters near the Russia-North Korea border, local media reported.

This year's UN General Assembly must be a forum in which the current administration's North Korea policy direction receives the support of the rest of the world, and is not portrayed as ineffectual talking, as Trump said, but rather as a necessary step in the direction of peace. "Rocket Man is on a suicide mission for himself and his regime".

McMaster said on the actual impact of the Security Council sanctions, "We all have our doubts about whether or not that's going to be enough", saying the focus now is on enforcement.

Trump fell under criticism for responding to North Korean rhetorical threats with rhetoric of his own, but Kang said he doesn't think that's a bad thing, because Trump's hints of a pre-emptive attack are something to be feared in North Korea.

Trump has threatened "fire and fury" in response to North Korea's threats.
