Wenger hopes that a similar situation can be avoided with another global duo, with discussions set to be held with England forward Welbeck and Wales midfielder Ramsey - who are now tied to the club until 2019.

Having missed out on the top four for the first time in Arsene Wenger's reign last season, fans were hoping for a major revamp of the squad to get the club back in the Champions League places at the very least.

Arsenal smashed their transfer record to sign Alexandre Lacazette for £56.5 million but that amount paled in comparison to the sum Paris Saint-Germain paid for Neymar (€222million/£198 million).

Former Arsenal player Gilles Grimandi, who is now a scout at the club, has contacted Rocchia's advisors about a transfer after watching him play, according to the report. "Regulate it properly, or leave it completely open", he said.

Should both Manchester clubs or just one of them win today it will put them on 16 points and that is a massive nine points more than Arsenal now have, so how will this big gap at such an early point of the season affect us?

"At the moment, we are a bit in between and that does not work", the Arsenal manager added.

A run of signing the likes of Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Petr Cech got rid of that label with big money moves that actually seemed to make sense.

"Because you will be in a position where you [either] extend for money that you can not afford, or you let them go into the final year of their contract", Wenger said.

"You will have more and more players going into the final year of their contract", Wenger predicted.

The left-back left Arsenal to join the Baggies this summer after spending the last 13 years with the Gunners and the French coach believes the club and the player can be proud of their association.

"So what happens? The club can not sell and doesn't extend the contract, so more and more players are going into the final year".
