China, Russia Foreign Ministers Stress Peaceful Solution to N. Korea's Nuke Issue

The watchdog said Thursday in its 2016 yearbook that the North Korean figures were uncertain.

Beyond that, Lavrov had few kind words for the US. "We have put in place the strongest economic sanctions ever to have been assembled against (North Korean leader) Kim Jong Un".

President Moon Jae-in was set to embark on a five-day trip to NY on Monday to attend the UN General Assembly and hold talks with other leaders on how to rein in North Korea's evolving nuclear and missile provocations.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump spoke about keeping pressure on North Korea using economic sanctions imposed through the United Nations, the White House said on Monday.

"Military hysteria is not just an impasse, it's a disaster", Lavrov chastised, adding that Russian Federation "resolutely condemned the missile adventures of Pyongyang in violation of Security Council resolutions".

China hoped that Japan talked and acted cautiously and played a constructive role on the nuclear issue, he said.

"The Sept. 19 statement, through its political dialogue, holds milestone significance in resolving the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula", Lu said. It was a theme that Lavrov struck as well, presenting Russian Federation, which invaded and annexed Crimea in 2014, as a force for balance, stability and peace on the world stage.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute says developments in North Korea's nuclear program "contributed to international political instability with potentially serious knock-on effects". Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro "has inflicted awful pain and suffering on good people of his country", Trump said and called for the restoration of democracy there. The attempts to ignore the opinions of others and to issue ultimatums without the United Nations approval "never led to anything good", he added.

"Right now, North Korea is being told, 'renounce weapons and we'll lift sanctions", Lavrov said. "I think that's been the overall theme from the global community this week, is how straightforward he was and how refreshing it was as they heard him speak", Haley told reporters at a press briefing.
