Twitter is testing a Lite app for Android

Facebook may have paved the way with the "lite" versions of its various apps, but now other social networks, including Twitter, are getting in on the trend of offering scaled-back apps for users in countries with slow data or unreliable connections. It's listed in the Google Play Store there as a separate app available for devices running Android version 5.0 and up.

The Twitter Lite app will work in a similar manner as their mobile site under the same moniker - consuming less data and tackling slow networks at the same time. In terms of size, Twitter Lite is only 3MB, and won't consume too much of your hardware resources.

It al started earlier this year when Twitter introduced a new version of its mobile site that it calls Twitter Lite. The app too has been designed specifically to consume less mobile data, while delivering nearly similar performance as the main Twitter app.

The app retains a number of familiar features, and that users can change their settings to turn off data-heavy images or videos. The new app boasts of its own dedicated Data Saver mode that has the ability to conserve additional mobile data. Would you love to see the Twitter lite app being made available in Zimbabwe?

All big companies are putting their efforts to make light versions of their apps for low-end Android devices and countries with slow internet. However, a spokesperson for the company told TechCrunch that the app is just an experiment, and that it's not sure if it'll test the app in other markets. Still, Twitter Lite provides the usual features that you would expect from a Twitter branded app.

Twitter Lite may use 70% less data than the standard Twitter app, and requires only 3 MB of storage. "Twitter Lite helps to overcome these barriers to use for Twitter in the Philippines". Of course, loads of them because you can still interact with your friends, access live scores, market your business, view your Timeline, the Explore Tab, Messages, Notification, and customize your profile to suit your taste.
