England cricketer Ben Stokes arrested and Alex Hales helping cops after incident

The Avon & Somerset Police have confirmed that "a 27-year-old man suffered facial injuries and was taken to the Bristol Royal Infirmary for treatement".

Team-mate Alex Hales was with Stokes and will also miss the match. He was behind the bars for the entire night and was later released without any charges. Stokes spent the night in prison but was released without charge.

Batsman Alex Hales, who was out with the 26-year-old Stokes after the match, returned voluntarily to Bristol on Tuesday to help police with the investigation, the England and Wales Cricket Board said.

The incident happened after England's victory in the third ODI against West Indies on Sunday, in which Stokes scored 73. Both Stokes and Hakes didn't attend team's training session ahead of the fourth ODI at The Oval.

The ECB reveal that England all-rounder Ben Stokes was arrested in Bristol on Monday morning after an incident in a bar.

Both Stokes and Hales will be considered for the Ashes on cricketing grounds alone, European Central Bank director of England cricket Andrew Strauss confirmed on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Hales has travelled back to Bristol to help the police in their inquiries on the incident.

Andrew Strauss, director of England cricket, said: "You will understand that we cannot offer detail at this stage but will provide any updates when we can".

Hales was with Stokes on Sunday night.

But the bigger concern is what it means for both players' Ashes selection.

Hales has been capped in all formats and was considered an outside bet for England's Ashes squad, which is due to be announced on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old Stokes was arrested and cautioned for abusive behaviour in 2011, and was sent home from a Lions tour in 2013 for "contravening conduct obligations".

In 2014 he was picked for the one-day tour of the Caribbean and broke his hand punching a locker after being dismissed for a golden duck by Krishmar Santoki.
