New York Gov. Cuomo pledges state aid effort for Puerto Rico

Jennifer Lopez says she's donating $1 million from the proceeds of her Las Vegas residency to relief efforts in Puerto Rico, where she has family roots.

"I can not tell you what it meant to me and to the people of Puerto Rico to see NY not only pledge support but Governor Cuomo to actually show up with resources and supplies", Lopez said.

"The consequences have been disastrous", she said, adding she still hasn't been able to get in touch with some relatives on the island.

The company has designated US$2 million in cash and other assistance to Puerto Rico, and the remaining US$1 million to local relief agencies supporting communities impacted in Florida, other islands in the Caribbean, The Bahamas, and Mexico. She and Anthony had both previously posted Instagram videos in Spanish (Anthony) and English (Lopez) asking the public to support Puerto Rican first lady Beatriz Rossello's efforts through unitedforpuertorico.com. "Alex Rodriguez and I are utilizing all of our resources and relationships in entertainment, sports, and business to garner support", she said, referring to her boyfriend, whose family comes from the Dominican Republic.

He also said federal response to Puerto Rico has been less than was done in Texas and Florida after Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

Lopez was born in the Bronx, New York, to Puerto Rican parents and has family that lives on the island.

The initiative comes two days after Cuomo visited Puerto Rico with donations that included 34,000 bottles of water and 9,600 ready-to-eat meals. She asked Americans to join their effort, saying, "Puerto Ricans are American citizens and today Puerto Rico needs our help. The island's greenery is gone". The government said it suffered a large crack after Maria dumped 15 inches of rain on the surrounding mountains and that it "will collapse at any minute".
