Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Kashmir, to visit Siachen

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reached Srinagar on Friday for a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, according to media reports.

Accompanied by Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Gen Bipin Rawat, she was received by Lt Gen D Anbu, Northern Army Commander and Lt Gen J S Sandhu, the Chinar Corps Commander.

Later the Defence Minister visited one of the forwardmost posts on the LoC in Kashmir, where she reviewed the security situation and military preparedness.

She was informed about the anti-infiltration grid already in operation along the LoC.

The defence minister, they said, asked the army men and officials to remain alert to foil all nefarious designs of the enemy including pushing of militants into J&K to create disturbances.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman meets Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra. Sitharaman assured Mehbooba to look into the issues raised by her in a time-bound manner, the spokesman said.

"The defence minister was subsequently briefed by the Army Commander in Badami Bagh Cantonment on the prevailing security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and was given an overview of the counter infiltration and counter terrorist operations undertaken in the recent past", he said.

South Kashmir was the epicentre of unrest in Valley previous year following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani on July 8.

The defence minister might either visit Siachen Base camp or carry out an aerial tour depending on the weather conditions at the world's highest battle field on Saturday.
