The vaccine is also recommended for people with lowered lowered immunity due to disease or treatment, such as Cancer treatment, a problem with the spleen, pregnant women, those in careers in front line health, carers and people who are handlers of live animals and birds.

In addition to providing flu vaccinations, the event serves as an emergency preparedness exercise to practice plans and procedures for dealing with a public health disaster that would require the Health Department to dispense large amounts of vaccine or medications to the community.

Here's what you need to know.

"Flu season" in the United States can begin as early as October and last as late as May, Dignity Health said.

For one type of the virus, called Influenza A, the "classic" presentation is a sudden onset, Fishman said.

"It's easy to get prepared for the cold and flu season, as your local urgent care center is an ideal convenient and affordable option for flu immunization and many other common non-life- or limb-threatening medical needs for your family", said Dr. Sullivan.

Doctors say you should get the shot annually to avoid getting the virus. CCHHS can bill Medicaid, Medicare and most private insurances for your convenience so please bring your insurance card if you have one. These include frequently washing your hands, coughing and sneezing into the crook of your elbow and avoiding people who appear to be sick.

"If it's a mild illness, it's generally self-limited", Maragakis said. "When more people get vaccinated against the flu less flu can spread through our campus community". Antiviral drugs are used when people are hospitalized or have certain underlying medical conditions, he said. The flu shot is $20.

Health officials say it is possible to infect others even when you do not show any symptoms.
