Anupam Kher new Chairman of FTII

Gajendra Chauhan, who is best known for playing 'Yudhishtir' in BR Chopra's hugely popular TV serial Mahabharata, had to face massive protest from FTII students. In fact, Kher openly chided Chauhan; he claimed Chauhan had no idea of cinema in a broader or global perspective and even told him to keep quiet when it came to justifying his appointment.

Although Kher has strong connections with BJP, he was a vocal critic of government's appointment of his predecessor Gajendra Chauhan.

He has appeared in over 500 films and in more than 100 plays and has also authored the book "The Best Thing about You Is You".

It is going to be a sort of rare achievement as he had in the past served as the chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and was also the director of National School of Drama from 2001 to 2004. It does certainly need a person who has a great body of work, which means he is supposed to know world cinema as well as the present state of cinema, like editing.

Kher will now head the FTII Society which is responsible for electing Governing Council and Academic Council which then takes decisions on important matters pertaining to administrative and academic matters concerning the institute. I was also appointed from different options.

He has also proved his acting pedigree in worldwide films like Bend It Like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice, Silver Linings Playbook and The Big Sick. Those who speak for BJP or RSS and support them are being appointed. The two-year tenure of Chauhan, which ended in March 2017, was marked by a 139-day strike by students. During the politically charged agitation by the students, several political leaders had also visited FTII campus in Pune.
