Browns officially name Kevin Hogan starter over DeShone Kizer

On Wednesday, Browns head coach Hue Jackson released a statement explaining his decision to go with Kevin Hogan over Kizer in Week 6. Deshaun Watson's meteoric rise continues for the Texans, but the Browns have pulled the plug on DeShone Kizer.

Add another name to the infamous Cleveland Browns quarterback jersey.

Jackson benched Kizer at halftime of Sunday's loss to the New York Jets for Hogan, who threw a pair of touchdown passes and moved the offense. This Sunday will be his first career start. He gets the ball out quickly and accurately, neither of which Kizer could do. "Right now, it's better for him and his development to back up Kevin". He began last season on the Browns practice squad and was elevated to the 53-man roster last October 11 - exactly one year before he won the starting job this season. He also has rushed five times for 35 yards.

Hogan, a fifth-round draft pick previous year out of Stanford, becomes the 28th quarterback to start a game for the Browns since their rebirth in 1999.

Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Thomas joined the Browns as the third overall pick in 2007, and he has blocked for an inordinate number of starting quarterbacks.

Kizer, the 52nd pick of the 2017 draft, can still be a franchise quarterback, Jackson said on October 9. His numbers: 81-of-159 (50.9 percent), three touchdowns, nine interceptions and 12 sacks. His passer rating is 49.5. Hogan has completed 26 of 38 passes with the same amount of touchdowns and two picks.
