On Facebook, users were unable to post status updates while Instagram users experienced a similar issue.

In our tests, both Facebook and Instagram are seemingly up in South Africa.

Some outlets, like PIX11, are reporting the outage has also affected Instagram, another one of Facebook's properties.

When asked what was causing the outages, a Facebook spokesperson only responded, "We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing Facebook and Instagram".

A number of users, who couldn't log in to Facebook, received a message, "Facebook will be back soon". Many are taking to Twitter to see if that site is also down, as seen above.

Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, is reportedly struggling too.

Users quickly turned to Twitter to vent their frustration at the Facebook problems.

World's biggest social networking website Facebook is down.

The website reported a spike in outage reports for the social network between 11 a.m. and noon.
