Sushma Swaraj assures aid to Russian found begging in TN temple

The Russian tourist identified as A. Evangelin resorted to seeking alms after he found his ATM card blocked on Tuesday.

Sushma moved to social media platform Twitter and wrote, Evangelin - Your country Russian Federation is our time-tested friend.

Evangelin, a Russian tourist had sought alms yesterday after he could not draw money with his ATM card as the PIN number got locked, police had said.

The Hindu reported that Evgenni arrived in Kancheepuram on Tuesday morning from Chennai, and visited a few temples in the area, before he went to an ATM kiosk near the Kumarakottam temple. The police gave him Rs 500 and put him on a suburban train to Chennai, where he was asked to approach the Russian embassy in the capital city. "My officials in Chennai will provide you all help", Swaraj said in a tweet.

Short of cash and utterly dissappointed, Evangelin had no option but to sit outside the temple and beg for alms using his cap. After getting the news, the Siva Kanchi police gave him some money to travel back to Chennai.

This is not the first incident when Swaraj helped someone.

In the last two days, Sushma Swaraj has approved medical visa requests of two Pakistanis.

32-year-old A. Evangelin Berdnikov was found begging outside the main entrance of a temple in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Extending help to the mother, Sushma Swaraj said, "We are giving visa for the open heart surgery of your one-year-old daughter Shireen Shiraz in India".
