Trump justifies throwing paper towels at Puerto Rican residents

Cruz argued that federal aid had been slow to reach Puerto Rico following Maria, which knocked out power to the entire island. "Have requested support from @FEMA_Brock NOTHING!" "WE NEED WATER!" Cruz tweeted Sunday morning.

"We filtered out the mayor a long time ago", FEMA administrator Brock Long said in an interview with ABC's This Week on Sunday.

Cruz's comments follow President Donald Trump's self-congratulatory assessment of his administration's performance in Puerto Rico, and a renewed round of insults about Cruz's work on the island. "We were the only logistics provider that had truck power - albeit limited at the time - available as soon as the U.S. Coast Guard reopened the port in San Juan".

In an interview with Mike Huckabee that aired on the Christian TV network Trinity Broadcasting, Trump justified his paper towel throwing stunt because the towels were "beautiful" and "soft".

"They had these attractive, soft towels. Very good towels", the president told Huckabee (whose daughter is the president's press secretary).

In regards to the relief efforts in Puerto Rico, Trump said they received nothing but praise from the governor and most of the mayors for the work that has been done. Afterwards, while Cruz said she hoped new channels of communication with the White House would "put in motion what is needed" to save lives, she also said Trump sometimes was more a "miscommunicator in chief" than a commander in chief.

The president feels the recovery is going well: In the same interview with Huckabee, he spoke favorably about the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Puerto Rico and the hurricane recovery in Texas and Florida because they had given him a sense of objective and made him personally feel good. The President claimed that although these events were bad, he saw them as an opportunity to help people and to feel good about doing so. "This juxtaposed against some of the media trying to say that you weren't attentive, but the people on the ground, the ones who were actually in the middle, thought your response was actually pitch ideal, is that frustrating to you?" asked Huckabee. "So it makes you feel good".

The administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) dismissed the mayor of San Juan's vocal criticism of the Trump administration's Hurricane Maria relief efforts in Puerto Rico.
