UFC star Conor McGregor celebrates Republic of Ireland win in style

The draw will take place on Tuesday October 17th with no time yet confirmed.

Martin O'Neill hailed his "magnificent" Republic of Ireland players after their 1-0 win against Wales earned them a play-off spot.

Northern Ireland came second in Group C after accepting from the outset they were not going to overhaul Germany for the only automatic qualifying spot.

Italy squandered several good chances until Candreva, unmarked to the left side of goalkeeper Etrit Berisha, was found with a ball across the area from Leonardo Spinazzola and fired home a powerful shot to give Italy the victory.

"But we had to come here tonight to win in Cardiff and we have come through and we have done exactly that, so it was a great performance by the players".

With Serbia winning, the Celtic showdown between Wales and Ireland in Cardiff was for the prize of a playoff berth in November.

"We had to withstand a lot of pressure, which you would expect".

'Celebrating Ireland in the World Cup play-offs tonight, ' he said.

Wales dominated possession in the first half, creating concern among the green hordes inside the stadium and obliging Ireland to feed off scraps in the final third.

But 10 minutes before the break, the Stoke City man was caught in a hefty challenge between McClean and David Meyler, and was assessed by medical staff before having to be substituted.

A draw will see the Dragons move on to a playoff against another second-placed team, while Ireland needs to win to move on.

Wales started the second half brightly and it took a brilliant acrobatic save from Randolph to prevent Robson-Kanu putting them in front with a header from Jonny Williams's right-wing cross.

"Right now all I can think about, picture in my mind, is the faces of the players in the dressing room and the disappointment". His energy... when you see James getting exhausted in a game with 10 minutes to go, you realise the rest of the players must be really exhausted because James just keeps going, keeps going.

Coleman's contract is believed to run until the end of Wales' World Cup campaign, which could have taken him to next summer, but instead may make him available immediately unless a new deal can be agreed.

He said: "I thanked them for their work, their passion, for making the nation proud".
