Disney's Movies Anywhere launches with five of six studios on board

Movies Anywhere is launching first in the United States, and all movies purchased from Disney, Fox, Sony Pictures, Universal, and Warner Bros. will be available to watch on Google Play. Entertainment; as well as The Walt Disney Studios, which includes films from Disney, Pixar, Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm.

Today, the idea of merging the various digital movie collections owned by many consumers will become a reality with the expansion of the Disney Movies Anywhere app and website to include nearly every major film studio in Hollywood.

It follows in the footsteps of the UltraViolet locker model (which studios abandoned for superior Disney tech) and the previous proprietary Disney Movies Anywhere. The collation of these major Hollywood Studios means there's over 7,000 available to be added to your locker, with Amazon Video, Google Play, iTunes and Vudu (A Walmart company) all set up to let you redeem the titles.

Five Hollywood film studios have joined together to offer a new service created to make it easier for consumers to collect digital movies that they can watch at home or on mobile devices, the studios said in a statement on Wednesday.

The new Movies Anywhere is a Disney-owned entity that will operate with input from an advisory committee made up of members from each of the participating studios. There's a server difficulties message appearing on the Disney Movies Anywhere website right now too, so it's possible that just too many people are currently looking into this.

It may be more tricky for UltraViolet users.

Google invites users to link their accounts now to take advantage of this offer, however, the Movies Anywhere website doesn't appear to have officially launched and the Google Play app page that Google links to also isn't live at the time of writing. Gilford didn't provide specifics about the future of Ultraviolet or how it may fit into the new service, only offering that Ultraviolet content could be accessed, at least for now, through a Vudu account. Understanding the needs of consumers, five major Hollywood studios and four major digital retailers are coming on board to significantly improve the service.
