EC to announce poll dates for Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh today

Elections Commission is likely to announce the dates for General Assembly Elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh on Thursday. Congress announced Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh as the party's chief ministerial candidate last week who has served as chief minister for six terms.

On a press conference Joti stated that "There is no doubt the polls will be held in December", When asked if it will be held in two phases, he added that it was yet to be decided. The tenure of the Gujarat Assembly ends on January 22, 2018. Hence, in November, the election dates for Himachal Pradesh polls are likely to be in the coming month.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A K Jyoti has said that in more than 50,000 booths in Gujarat, the voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) system will be used.

Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh election date likely to be declared by EC today. "Assembly Elections will mostly be conducted in December", Jyoti said.

The paper slips will be counted at a single booth in each 182 constituencies to tally the number of slips and the votes cast, the CEC was quoted as saying in a PTI report. VVPAT was first used in the Goa polls earlier this year. The Himachal Lokhit Party had won 1 seat while Independents bagged 5.

Himachal Pradesh has 68 seats and is governed by the Congress.

The polls are seen as a barometer of support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a time when a sputtering economy has handed the opposition Congress party a possible opening to regain political ground. Since 1985, the state has never re-elected an incumbent and the Congress and BJP have exchanged power.
