IAF personnel killed in gunfight with militants in Kashmir

Two Air Force commandos were also killed in the gunfight.

In September 2016, over 19 Indian soldiers were killed in an attack on the Uri army base.

Two militants and as many army men were killed in a fierce encounter at Hajin area of north Kashmir's Bandipora district on Wednesday.

India has lost two commandos of its air force in an early morning encounter with the Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists in Bandipora of north Kashmir.

"They (militants) were asked to stop and surrender but they opened fire and lobbed a grenade, in which one Garud commando achieved martyrdom on the spot and another was seriously injured.Later he too succumbed", the statement said. This attack result to the injuries of two jawans and also two Garud personnel martyred.

According to the Kashmir Media Service, a youth in the Keran area of Kupwara district was also killed in a separate gun battle.

One pistol, a huge quantity of ammunition and two AK-series rifles were recovered from the encounter site. The security forces have been giving a befitting reply and foiling all attempts to vitiate atmosphere in the state.

The incident took place in the wee hours of Wednesday when a Special Operation Group of J&K police and Army conducted a search operation in Rakh-e-Hajin village. The terrorists have been identified as Abu Bakr and Nasrullah Mir. "The Chinar Corps commander and all ranks salute the martyrs and offer condolences to the bereaved families". Hundreds of people attended the funeral of the local militant, the reports said.

The IAF said the joint team of IAF personnel and the Army laid a cordon around a house in Hajin village after getting intelligence input that 5-6 terrorists were hiding in it. The security forces are going after militants as part of Operation Hunt Down and on the basis of a hit list of terrorists.
