Russia Protests Flag Removal at Seized San Francisco Consulate

Zakharova said that Moscow considered the removal of its flags as a "hostile step" and was thinking new measures in response to it.

The Russian Embassy to the United States said on its Russian-language Twitter account that flags were "stolen" from the building, and called it "the latest shameful event" in a series of tit-for-tat diplomatic reprisals between the countries this year.

A U.S. Department of State official told Sputnik that Russian flags were "respectfully" lowered by USA officials at former Russian properties in Washington, DC and San Francisco, when the buildings were closed.

Russia's Foreign Ministry has issued a statement of protest after American authorities reportedly took down several Russian flags from a seized consulate in San Francisco. We perceive this as an "extremely unfriendly move, the statement said".

"Obviously the Russian side has never agreed to its flags being removed", she added, calling the removal "a violation of a Russian state symbol". "In addition to the blatant attack on the flags, the Americans do not hide the fact that they have also rummaged through the documents in the office of the Consulate General in San Francisco, even though consular archives shall be considered inviolable in accordance with the bilateral Consular Convention".

The Russian Embassy in Washington has forwarded an official protest to the USA authorities with a demand to return Russian state symbols to their flag poles. Besides, they demanded that the Consulate General in San Francisco should be closed and the consul general's residence emptied. US State Department officials, in turn, said that employees of the department made the round of the Russian premises after all diplomats had left them.

Washingon deliberately destroys relations with Moscow, the Russian Foreing Ministry stated on Thursday commenting on removal of Russian flags from Russian diplomatic missions in the United States, reported Sputnik.

Nevertheless, the buildings in question still remain the property of Russian Federation, except for the office of the trade mission, which Russian Federation was renting.
