Attempted NC prison break leaves several employees injured

- Authorities are investigating after an attempted escape at an Elizabeth City jail Thursday afternoon.

An attempted escape occurred at Pasquotank Correctional Institute Thursday in Elizabeth City Thursday afternoon, according to N.C. Public Safety. Fires set in prison sewing plant.

The Department of Public Safety said Pasquotank Correctional Institute can house about 900 close, medium and minium custody inmates.

According to WNCN, fires were set at the facility and three nearby schools are on lockdown.

School officials also did not want to risk the possibility of students being home alone with the potential of escaped inmates in the area. "Several employees injured." It added there would be "more info when available".

Northside Elementary, Elizabeth City Middle School and Pasquotank County High School were placed on lockdown, which was lifted just before 5 p.m.

The institution is a high-security prison for men and has capacity to hold almost 900 inmates, according to its website. Buses were ordered to back to their schools with any students still in transit.

A spokesperson from the Sentara Albemarle Medical Center told WAVY the hospital has taken in six patients, but did not specify if they were all prison employees.

Elizabeth City fire crews and EMS have responded to the prison.
