Accusing Gurung of having links with Maoists and northeastern insurgent groups, Sharma said the beleaguered GJM leader wanted to disturb the peace process.

"To tarnish the image of GJM and to brand it as a militant organisation, the West Bengal Police has been shown to have seized sophisticated arms and ammunition from Tukvar area, which is under doubt and suspicion as the arms and ammunition may have been planted by the police themselves", the statement by GJM General Secretary Roshan Giri said.

The state government which will give Rs 5 lakh to the family of the braveheart, will also provide jobs to both the wife and the father of the slain official, minister for education Partha Chatterjee today announced after a cabinet meeting that took the decision in this regard.

Last night, the police had conducted a raid in the Nimbu Basti area of Darjeeling to catch Bimal Gurung.

After cases under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act were filed against him for his alleged involvement in various bomb blasts in Darjeeling and adjoining areas, Gurung has gone into hiding.

"He has procured arms from them".

The police have also recovered 500 rounds of bullets, 6 AK47 assault rifles and one countrymade pistol from the spot that was raided.

He said the police faced “heavy fire” from the group which led to the death of a police sub-inspector and injuries to four police personnel.

Meanwhile, the police said that it had intelligence inputs that Gurung was hiding near Patlebas. “We will not allow this to happen at any cost, even if we have to make sacrifices, ” he said.

Expelled GJM leader and chairman of the Board of Administrators for Darjeeling hills, Binay Tamang, said Gurung was responsible for today's events.
